Are you a low-income youth between the ages of 16-24? Have you considered a career in computers, engineering, aerospace, robotics, astronomy, accounting, video game design, alternative energy, bioscience or any other STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) career but need help getting started? Need more information about STEM careers to make a decision? The best paying jobs—and the jobs of the future—are in fields like these. With this new grant we can help you get started on the education you'll need.

Internships

Saturday Academy's Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering

Learn first-hand about science or engineering as a career. Students assist scientists and engineers in a variety of fields for eight weeks during the summer. Students are able to help with real-world projects while being an integral member of a professional team. The benefits are many: you gain valuable pre-professional experience, you get to test out a particular career first-hand and see if it's what you want to pursue, and you have the satisfaction and confidence from having completed one or more projects or contributed meaningful work to a larger, on-going project.

The Business Education Compact

Get a flavor for working in the real world, make some great connections, have something to put on your resume, and get paid for doing it. There are many positions out there, such as web design, administrative assistance, network support, marketing, community relations, hardware maintenance, software development, and more.

OHSU's CURE Project

The Continuing Umbrella of Research Education (CURE) Project is a research mentorship training program supported by the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and the OHSU Center for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. It is designed to offer research experiences to students from the Portland area that excel academically and come from socially and economically disadvantaged background. The goals of this program are to give hands-on research experience, science exposure and to increase participation of underserved and minority students in biomedical research and other health-related fields.

High Desert Teens

Become a part of an exciting team where you can share your love of wildlife, history and the natural world. The High Desert Teens program is a summer program that provides teens with an opportunity to gain valuable social, work, and leadership skills, while serving the community and supporting the mission of the High Desert Museum.

MESA High School Internships

MESA offers a variety of internships opportunities at different locations.

Ages: Grades 9-12 (this most probably depends on the individual internship)

Oregon Zoo Farm Youth Volunteers

The Family Farm exhibit offers visitors a chance to interact with animals such as goats, cows and pigs, as well as with the teens that care for them. From September through May teen interns, with help from job shadow volunteers, are responsible for the daily operations of the farm and will work alongside farm mentors to make sure the animals are well cared for and visitors have a good time.

Zoo Teens

If you aren't sure what to do next summer, and you want to help make a difference while gaining valuable work experience and expand your resume, you need to become a ZooTeen volunteer. With the ZooTeen Program, you can get behind the scenes at the Zoo, gain great work experience, develop your leadership skills, and help with the care and feeding of the animals. Applications are accepted between January and March.
